Musings on art, beauty, culture, aesthetics, and the spiritual life by wood wall sculptor Douglas W. Merkey.

"The soul is weighed in the balance"

"The soul is weighed in the balance by what delights her. Delight or enjoyment sets the soul in her ordered place. Where the delight is, there is the treasure." - St. Augustine

"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." - Jesus

Perhaps it could be said that all people pursue beauty above all things if beauty is what "sets the soul in her ordered place." Lenny Kravitz croons about this essential desire in his song "Stillness of Heart."

All that I want is
Stillness of heart
So I can start
To find my way
Out of the dark
And into your heart

Of course, people can pursue ugliness thinking it's beauty and ignorantly dismiss true beauty for ugliness. It seems that this pursuit of beauty should be met by the arts, even if only partially. Gazing upon a beautiful work of art can bring the soul to a place seldom experienced in the world - a place of real rest and delight and order.
