Artist’s Statement

Imagine a hot, steamy stack of buckwheat waffles, slathered with butter and oozing with hot maple syrup. That’s the mouthwatering image evoked by this sculpture. The warmth of the lace wood lattice along with the warm, complimentary color and texture of the maple ingots conjures this image. The clean lines emulate the nooks and crannies of a hot-off-the-griddle waffle. Dig in and enjoy!

An interesting, and somewhat humorous story: This is the first, and probably only, sculpture I have done in an exotic wood called lace wood. That’s because it caused a massive allergic reaction in my body! Yes, this sculpture comes to you at a great price of physical discomfort on the part of the artist (ha, ha!). Of course, I didn’t know I’d react to this wood when I selected it for this piece. I just thought the wood was amazingly beautiful, and it truly is. There are no stains used in this piece, so the unique texture and coloring of the lace wood shines through naturally. Even with my allergic reaction, I think this piece is one of the cleanest, most beautiful designs I’ve ever created. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do, but without the itching.
