Artist’s
Statement
For the last year or so I have
been contemplating the idea that God’s relationship
with His people in Christ is like a dance. That is, He leads
and we follow. The idea of dancing with God, as a dance partner
follows her leader, is a beautiful one. There are few things
as magnificent as a couple perfectly paired dancing as one
across the floor. He initiates, she responds with fluidity
and immediacy. The dancing couple looks beautiful, together.
This is the vision I long to see realized in my own life with
God. Perhaps this sculpture will nourish that vision for you,
too.
The Dance is not only about God’s dancing with
individuals, but it also captures the sense of God’s
dancing with a group of His people – The Church. Each
single cube represents God’s dance with an individual.
The natural wood ingot on one side represents the human partner,
and the divinely-painted side represents God. Each cube spins
freely on its axis, like an individual couple that dances
as one on an invisible axis. Taken together, the entire series
of cubes (70 total, in this sculpture), evokes the scene of
a dance floor full of gorgeously united couples spinning,
striding, and twirling to the same music. This image is the
sense of God’s interplay with His Church, the collection
of His people who trust in Christ for eternal life. It is
a beautiful picture indeed!
This sculpture is designed to be somewhat interactive. Go
ahead and gently spin the cubes. As you do so, imagine
God twirling you around in His divine dance!
