Artist’s Statement

I had the basic idea for this sculpture brewing in my heart for at least 6 months before I created it. The idea found its first expression in the sculpture Weaver. But the full expression is represented in this piece, Kindling. The idea was to make an entire sculpture of random and artistically woven strands of wood, giving the piece the feel of a woven basket. Kindling was ready to be born when I had amassed a wide variety of wood strands in my studio. I made a sturdy frame of Maple and Brazilian Ebony, and then began the weaving process. I must say that this was one of the most spontaneous and fun wood sculptures I’ve created. It took less engineering than others, and I was free to just “let it flow” as I wove the various wood strands together. I am very pleased with the outcome.

By the way, the name of the piece comes at the “advice” of my shop-mate and occasional creative collaborator, Paul. So Paul, I dedicate this piece to you! Thanks for the help, bro. - Doug
