As simple
as the design appears, this piece actually was one of the
most difficult to engineer. Yes, sculptures of this type require
engineering – figuring out how they will come together
and stay together while conveying the simplicity of the design!
In fact, some of the simplest designs require the most structural
engineering thought.
The design is simple enough. I wanted a basic square shape,
but with depth and an interlocking feel. I desired for the
visual interest in the piece to be in the shadows, angles,
colors, and interlocking planes of the wood. In part, a desired
response from a viewer would be, “hmmm, that’s
interesting…I wonder how he did that….”
In this response, I desire the viewer to be drawn in to examine
the work.
After I completed the piece, I mused for a while over what
I would name it. The image that stood out to me most as I
looked at it was that of an accordion. You know, that wind
instrument with all the folds and a keyboard. Like the accordion
instrument, the sculpture Accordion, is unique and interesting.
I hope you enjoy exploring it!
