This
story starts with an old friend and Covenant Seminary classmate
turned church planter, Lance, visiting the shop where I worked
part time to pick up a job he’d ordered from my boss.
While there, he and I got to talking about sculpture, church
planting, and casting a vision. Our conversation turned toward
the potential of my making a sculpture that would help Lance
communicate the vision for his new church plant, WayPoint
Church.
This design incorporated a new challenge for me in sculpture:
glass - etched glass, to be exact. I chose etched glass for
its light-ness and the ability to use it to communicate several
ideas beautifully in a unique format. Glass is what enabled
the stepped design you see in this sculpture. But the glass
was only one element of this piece. As with all my wood sculptures,
I try hard to let the natural beauty of the wood speak for
itself. The walnut used in this piece is beautifully grained!
No stains were used in this piece. The way the grain on the
base piece points forward greatly enhances the sculpture and
is one of those things that I just stumbled across in the
artistic process. Overall, the sculpture came out well –
it communicates the vision of WayPoint Church in an aesthetically
beautiful and simple way.
