I am consistently amazed at the wide variety and stunning
beauty in the various woods that God has created on the earth.
I consider the dark, hard, delightfully-grained Brazilian
Ebony I used for this sculpture is one of the most beautiful
woods He’s made. My main hope for this sculpture was,
like many of my pieces, very simple. I wanted only to make
an interesting design using the basic format of an offset
latticework. With that in mind, I cut the various lengths
of Ebony and played around arranging them differently for
quite a while. When I decided on a form I liked, I went about
cutting the notches that would let them interlock.
The Maple edging was something of an afterthought. I wanted
to give the darkness of the Ebony at least some contrast,
but not anything overpowering. Slight Maple edges on some
of the inner vertical pieces turned out to do the trick. Like
many of my sculptures, I often have to learn new things to
accomplish what I have in my mind, and the edging in this
work filled that challenge. It was quite a labor! But I am
quite satisfied with the end result. The finished piece is
clean and simple, and has a very warm and interesting eye
appeal.
