At the time it was completed, this sculpture represented the
most challenging wood sculpture I’d undertaken. I spent
more time engineering this piece and getting feedback from
my artistic partner, Paul, than any other to date. Like many
of my designs, I wanted this one to be simple. I also wanted
the natural beauty of the wood to dominate the sculpture;
hence the reason for no metal hinges or fixtures which are
so common on such boxes. At the same time, this would be the
most utilitarian sculpture I’ve created, so it had to
have a practical functionality while accomplishing all my
other aesthetic goals.
The Walnut body of the box shows God’s handiwork in
creating such a fine material for artisans like me. The grains
in the Walnut are marvelous! I purposefully wanted all the
end grain to show out in the front of the box for consistency,
interest, and beauty. Opening each drawer and the top cover
of the box reveals the beauty of the woods within: Mahogany,
Oak, and Zebrawood. These woods in themselves are like jewels
– unique and stunning.
