Artist’s Statement

Toes on the Nose captures perhaps the most classic of all surfing poses. It hearkens back to a time when long boards ruled the surf. A surfer could practically walk on his long board, which is a relatively heavy wood plank that often measured over 9 feet. The weight of the board enabled a rider to stand out on the nose and relax while cruising casually toward the beach.

A stylish long board ride exudes poise and relaxation. No short board, lip-ripping gymnastics here! Just coolly hangin’ ten (shorthand for surfing with your toes hanging over the end of the board). For this reason, Toes on the Nose is a calming sunrise in the modern freestyle surfing world characterized by highly athletic, intricate, quick moves on short boards. To that respectable genre, Toes on the Nose says, “chill, dude!”
