Artist’s Statement

Many words could be used to describe love. The one I wanted to embody in this sculpture is playfulness. Love is playful! It brings spontaneous joy and celebration out of the human heart to share with the object of one’s affection. It’s nourishing to the soul. It dismisses heaviness and darkness. Playfulness is a bright crimson thread that brings color and pizzazz to love.

When I was making this sculpture, people that visited my studio would always smile when they saw it. That’s how I knew I was on the right track with the sculpture. I want the sculpture to bring a joyful smile. On a deeper level, it’s my hope that an observer’s smile is the natural outward response of a warmed and lightened heart. That’s what I hope is behind the smile of any observer who sees Love at Play.

If you are in love, let Love at Play encourage you to be playful. If you are seeking love, let its message be to cultivate playfulness in a new relationship. Either way, enjoy playfulness with whomever God has given you to love!
