Artist’s Statement

In Exodus 3, God initiates a conversation with Moses who was "tending the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law... at Horeb, the mountain of God" (v. 1). This sculpture seeks to capture Moses' response in the strangeness of the moment when God first appeared to him in the burning bush. The ensuring conversation laid out God's plan to redeem His people by liberating them from 430 years of slavery in Egypt. Of specific inspiration was verse 3 which says, "So Moses thought, 'I will go over and see this strange sight - why the bush does not burn up.'" As an artist, I wondered what must have been going on in Moses' mind and heart as he marveled at the bush. Alarm? Surprise? Fear? Curiosity? Readiness?

As you study this piece, I mean to bring you to this intimate moment between God and His servant, Moses. At the same time, I mean to have you consider what goes on in your own mind and heart when God calls you to follow Him into some difficult situation. What happens when He speaks to your heart, encouraging you to obey Matthew 28:19 right on the spot, in the grocery store, by sharing the gospel with the check-out clerk? If I were to sculpt your expression, what would it look like at that moment? What about when God calls you to get intimately involved in another person's "messy" life to care for them on Christ’s behalf? What about when God calls you to let Him use you in preaching the gospel to spiritually dead, even hostile people?
God still calls His servants by the testimony of their hearts in rhythm with the objectivity of His Word, counsel, and circumstances. When He speaks, what is your response?
